People had to sit very still for these photos, so they ended up looking pretty serious, leaving teeth, smile wrinkles, and personality to the imagination. Perhaps away from the camera's restrictive lens -- or maybe just in their wildest dreams -- they were spontaneous party animals with a penchant for dazzling colour.
We'll never know, but these added illustrations with carefully embroidered thread suggest we can break through the confines of corset anywhere, anytime, if we just use our imaginations.
